Chances are that someday in your life you will be presented with using or buying a mobility aid device. Thanks to my chat with medical equipment provider Mike Messer, I was able to compose this very helpful article on manual wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs, and powered scooters. Knowing the distinction between these devices is imperative if you are considering a buy so hopefully this knowledge will be quite helpful.
The two main types of manual wheelchairs are folding frame wheelchairs and rigid frame wheelchairs. Rigid frame wheelchairs possess a seat back that folds for transportation. The wheels have axles that may be rapid released making it easy to allow them to fit into a vehicle. Most people are able to load their rigid wheelchair into a car without help, because they are constructed of light-weight aluminum and normally weigh a mere 10 to 20 lbs without wheels. Foldable frame wheelchairs are standard wheelchairs or sometimes known as as conventional wheelchairs. They are often heavy and sometimes hard for a user to load into a vehicle. They are manufactured with a frame that may be easy to fold, but as pointed out before, these types of chairs may require you to need help loading them into your vehicle.
Electric wheelchairs commonly utilize belts and gears in order to operate. They are typically quiet in their operation. Belt drive versions require more maintenance than gear drive models. These models come in all sizes and shapes and greatly differ in their sturdiness. Light frame types usually are great for in house use while the heavy frame types fair better outside the house. There are back wheel drive models which are the most conventional and popular. They provide inferior turning capabilities but have swifter speeds. There are Front wheel drive types which provide much better and tighter turning capabilities. Because of the ease of turning however, these types have a reduced speed to insure basic safety. Mid wheel electric wheelchairs have the tightest turning abilities but also have the tendency to be unsteady when halting and starting off. They use additional castor wheels and tip proof wheels but this may make it tougher to use these on difficult terrain.
Mobility scooters are the most preferred type of electric chair. They come in three and four wheel styles and are available with front side and rear wheel drive. They are more reasonably priced than power wheelchairs and many are designed for their ease of mobility and ease of transportation. They steer much like a bicycle and have controls that allow you to control speed. They are much lighter in weight and can be disassembled easily to transfer around town. Front wheel Drive models can typically hold up to 150 lbs. and are designed more for indoor use while back wheel drive models can carry a max of 250 to 500 pounds depending on the model, and can better handle the outdoor surfaces if necessary.
Many thanks and I hope you learned some beneficial information from this write-up. Best of luck and I hope you are confident enough to make an educated decision when acquiring the mobility equipment that is most effective for you.
